Auto Safety Disconnect (ASD)
Velocity ALS Auto Safety Disconnect (ASD) eliminates the high risk potential for electrocution while working on a Permanent Magnet Motor Electrical Submersible Pump. The ASD is installed between the wellhead and the step-up transformer to provide protection from downhole regenerated lethal voltage from entering the step up transformer and subsequently the variable speed drive.
The ASD utilizes one leg of the incoming low voltage power to close the internal contactors. In the absence of the low voltage power, the contactors are open meaning no regenerative power from downhole can pass the ASD. This therefore prevents field service technicians from being electrocuted when they are troubleshooting the drive or changing taps on the step-up transformer.
The ASD does not stop power generation, but provides a fail safe barrier that will keep personnel safe.
An optional back-spin relay can be incorporated to open the contactor every time the ESP shuts down to prevent excessive load on the capacitance bank of the variable speed drive.
